Goldendoodle Rescues: How to Find the Best Doodle Rescue

Posted by Bridget Reed on

Here at PAWZ, we love all of our pawfect pups equally. From St. Bernards to poodles to German shepherds, we think every one of our four-legged furry friends is a tiny angel on Earth.

Still, we know some people prefer one breed above all others — and we can see why Goldendoodles are so adored! Between their curly hair, vibrant shiny coats, and extreme intelligence, what’s not to love? Factor in that they’re also hypoallergenic, and you’ve got yourself a winner in our book.

Today’s article is all about these real-life teddy bears: What they’re like, how they act, and how to find your perfect doodle bear at a rescue. We can’t wait to help you bring your new pup to their new home!

What Exactly Is a Goldendoodle?

Before we talk about why you need a Goldendoodle, let’s talk about what they are. A Goldendoodle is known as a hybrid breed. As the name might suggest, Goldendoodles are a cross between two breeds: a poodle and a golden retriever. These highly intelligent and loving dogs have a strong desire to please their families and are easily trainable.

They also have that cute curly coat that makes them look like large, real-life teddy bears. Another pawesome Goldendoodle fact is that their coats are hypoallergenic, meaning that even people with allergies to dogs can generally tolerate Goldendoodles.

Why? Well, poodles don’t have traditional dog fur — it’s more like hair on our heads. This makes us less allergic to them and means that most of us who can’t handle the dander from other types of dogs can happily hang with the doodle variety.

What Are Goldendoodles Like?

The characteristics of a Goldendoodle are also super easy to love. They’re great with families and other animals in the house, and they’re happy and active pups. Along with being easy to train, their coats are also easy to keep clean and goldens love water, so getting them in the bath shouldn’t be difficult.

Doodles are pretty outgoing pups, so they’ll make friends fast. This can be a double-edged sword, we know. Many of us like dogs more than people, and if you’re on the shy side, this could mean more stranger interaction than you’d ideally want. On the other hand, it’s awesome to meet a new group of dog-loving pals!

If you have small kids — or if you’re thinking about adding a human baby to your family — doodles will be great to have around. They’re very patient, and they have the energy and endurance to keep up with your kiddos. Tag in your pup when you need a break, and your pawdorable baby will make a friend for life.

What Kind of Environment Do They Need?

Another reason to love this breed: they can thrive in apartments and houses alike.

Yes, doodles will need exercise. Their breed comes with an intense amount of energy, and they need outlets for it. Games of fetch, swimming, and long walks are ideal for these dogs. Still, with all the hard play comes a need for serious rest. This is why they’ll do great with a big yard or a small apartment.

As long as you have a way to tire out your doodle daily, they’ll do just fine in a small space. Once they’re at home, they’ll want to cuddle right up with you anyway — you’ll never need a real blanket again!

One More Thing About Exercise

Our love for dogs is unmatched, but our love for fashion is a close second. If you have a cute new doodle to walk everywhere, you’re going to need to make sure your outfits are up to par.

We suggest PAWZ’s cute and comfy crewneck collection. The styles are so fun, and they’re ideal for a day of exercise with your furbaby. Even though we don’t pick favorites, definitely look into our I Heart Dogs & Coffee Crewneck. Your coffee run has never been cuter!

Finding the Best Rescue

It’s no secret that PAWZ loves animal rescues. We know that there are specific breeds and needs that we have when adding a pup to our family. Thankfully, this is still totally possible even if you choose to rescue.

These days, there are plenty of options out there to find a specific breed or even a rescue that specifically caters to these breeds. Our partners at Best Friends Animal Society are a great tool to use to help you find the rescue (and pup!) of your dreams.

Once you read about all the ways to find your perfect doodle rescue, you’ll be one step closer to the pup you’ve always wanted.

Finding the Right Rescue

Rescues have popped up everywhere for specific breeds. It is no longer a necessity to go through a breeder if you have one special pup in mind. Tons of shelters have the breed of your dreams—like a Goldendoodle rescue, perhaps—but people just don’t know where to look. Thankfully, you have us to guide you!

We are breaking down some easy ways to search for breed-specific rescues and get your Goldendoodle home faster.

Pro Tip: You may want to get a few dog mom tees ready, to inspire you and keep you pawsitive through the whole process!

How Do Pups End Up at Shelters?

People tend to have strong opinions about breed-specific shelters and rescues. Why? Well, one of the hypothetical reasons is that breed-specific rescues are somewhat new. Of course, they’ve been around for a few years — and they’re getting more popular by the day! As breed-specific rescues become more mainstream (even for hybrid breeds!), more people will see just how awesome these rescues really are.

There is one thing we want to make sure you understand: These shelter dogs are awesome. There’s a misconception that the dogs who end up at rescues and shelters have issues with their health or behavior, but we’re here to nip that right in the bud. This isn’t true at all!

Breed-specific rehoming centers and foster homes typically fill up with Goldendoodle puppies when puppy mills are found and shut down. That means they’re full of pawesome rescue dogs that need homes and have never had a family before. All you need to do is pay an adoption fee and complete the adoption process!

More Food for Thought

These breed-specific rescues are ideal for certain breeds that need a little TLC. PAWZ loves all dogs, but some popular dog breeds have care requirements that others don’t.

For example, doodles get separation anxiety, and they need ample exercise and attention daily. Breed-specific rescues (even for mixed-breed dogs like doodles) are perfect for them because they’re able to socialize the way they need and play fetch until they’re ready for a nap. Many can also spay and neuter their adorable charges. This is also ideal for rehabilitating rescue pups!

Finding a Breed-Specific Rescue in Your Area

Our partners at Best Friends Animal Society have amazing resources you can use to find the perfect doodle rescue. There are plenty of options out there, but BFAS will help match you with the rescue center (and doodle) that’s right for you. Search engines can also provide a lot of help in finding a plethora of rescues, so you can find the best pup who’s closest to home.

If you’re looking for a Goldendoodle, mini Goldendoodle, bernedoodle, cockapoo, or another poodle mix to give a forever home, be sure to look for organizations and dog owners near you and get on a waiting list.

A few of the best Goldendoodle rescues and doodle-related non-profit organizations include:

  • Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) (Delaware Valley)
  • Doodle Rock Rescue (Dallas/Fort Worth)
  • Doodle Dandy Rescue
  • Norcal Poodle Rescue
  • GRIN Rescue
  • IDOG Rescue Group (Houston)
  • Golden Retriever Rescue Resource (GRRR) (Ohio)

Now, you have all the fast facts you need on Goldendoodles and how to find your perfect family dog. We are insanely jealous that you’ll be bringing home the cutest living teddy bear and cannot wait for all the cuddles and love in your future.
